David Murphy

David Murphy is a Professor of Mathematics in his seventeenth year of teaching at Hillsdale College.

He obtained his B.A. in Mathematics from Western Michigan University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois. Before coming to Hillsdale, he taught for three years at nearby Kalamazoo College.

His research has been in the areas of algebraic geometry, representation theory, and invariant theory. He coauthored a textbook, "Algebraic Geometry: A Problem Solving Approach", that was published in 2013 by the American Mathematical Society. He also has interests in the history and philosophy of mathematics and in recreational mathematics.

In 2016, he received the Distinguished Teaching Award from the Michigan Section of the Mathematical Association of America. He also collaborated with Thomas Treloar teaching an online math course in 2020 titled "Mathematics and Logic: from Euclid to Modern Geometry". In 2021, he became the new director of Hillsdale College’s Summer Science Camp program, which celebrates its 32nd year this summer.
