The tradition of venerating Our Lady of Guadalupe is shrouded in controversy. From as early as the 1550s important religious authorities attacked the legitimacy of the first hermita (small chapel) and the sincerity of those who prayed there; a history of skepticism has continued up to our own time. This presentation by Professor of Medieval Spanish Literature Luis Cortest of the University of Oklahoma includes an examination of the most famous detractors and the most important defenders of the tradition.
